How to Properly Take Care of Your Roof: Seasonal Checks From the Ground and Safe Gutter Work (2026)

What can you check on your roof from the ground?

More than you’d think. Pick a clear morning, grab a pair of binoculars and walk slowly around the house. Stand back far enough to see each slope. Then look for these signs.

• Missing, cracked or curled shingles. Edges that lift or cup upward let wind and water in.
• Bare patches or granules in the gutters. Shingles shed their protective granules as they age. A gutter full of grit is a clue.
• Dark streaks. Often algae, especially in humid areas. It’s mostly cosmetic, but note where it spreads.
• Sagging lines. The ridge and the roof planes should look straight. A dip can mean a problem with the deck underneath.
• Flashing. Look at the metal around the chimney, vents and skylights. Gaps, rust or lifted edges are common leak points.
• Gutters and downspouts. Watch for sagging runs, loose brackets and water spilling over the edge during rain.

Then go inside. In the attic, with a flashlight, look for daylight through the boards, water stains, damp insulation or a musty smell. Ceiling stains on the top floor after a storm are worth a call, even if they dry.

What roof care should you do each season?

Here’s a simple calendar. The checks take about 15 minutes; gutter work takes longer.

After any big storm, do an extra ground check. In hurricane or hail areas, your insurer may want photos soon after the event.

How do you use a ladder safely for roof and gutter work?

Falls are the real risk in DIY roof care, so take ladder setup seriously. OSHA’s construction standard for portable ladders, 29 CFR 1926.1053, is written for workplaces, but its basics make sense at home too.

• The 4-to-1 rule. The horizontal distance from the ladder’s foot to the wall should be about one-quarter of its working length. For a 16-foot reach, set the base about 4 feet out.
• Extend 3 feet. If you’re climbing to the roof edge, the side rails should extend at least 3 feet above it.
• Stay away from power lines. OSHA requires nonconductive side rails, such as fiberglass, near exposed live electrical equipment. At home, keep any ladder well clear of the service drop.
• Firm, level footing. No soft soil, wet grass or decking boards that flex.
• Three points of contact. Two hands and a foot, or two feet and a hand, every time you climb.
• Don’t overreach. Keep your belt buckle between the rails. Climb down and move the ladder instead.

Have someone at home while you work, and don’t climb in wind, rain or on a hot afternoon when shingles are soft.

How do you clean gutters without damaging the roof?

Work from the ladder, not from the roof. Each step on asphalt shingles can loosen granules, and tile can crack underfoot.

1. Start near a downspout and scoop debris into a bucket hung from the ladder.
2. Move the ladder often, every few feet, rather than leaning out.
3. Flush the run with a garden hose at normal pressure to check the slope.
4. If water backs up, clear the downspout from the bottom first, then from the top.
5. Tighten loose brackets and seal small joint leaks with gutter sealant.

Resist the urge to “clean” the roof itself. The Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association says never to use a power washer, brush or broom on asphalt shingles to remove algae. It says a gentle bleach and water solution can lighten stains for a while, left on for 15 to 20 minutes and rinsed gently, but warns the roof gets slippery and encourages hiring professionals. When should you stop and call a roofer?

Call a pro when the fix means walking on the roof, when the pitch is steep, when the house is two stories or more, or when there’s a power line near your work area. Also call for:

• Leaks inside the house, even small ones.
• Damaged flashing around a chimney or skylight.
• More than a handful of missing shingles after a storm.
• Soft spots, sagging or rot at the eaves.
• An older roof that hasn’t been inspected in the last few years.

Ask for photos of what they find. A good roofer will show you the problem before quoting the fix.
