Updated October 2026. Smart, low-tech and high-tech moving tips for homeowners, with mover rules from the FMCSA and change-of-address steps from USPS, read October 29, 2026.
The most useful moving tips for homeowners are the small systems that save money and arguments later: a photo inventory before packing, numbered box labels tied to a list, a mover checked in the FMCSA database, and an online USPS change of address. As of October 2026, USPS charges a $1.25 identity fee online and asks you to allow 7 to 10 business days.

Key takeaways
- Film every room before packing. Interstate movers give you 9 months to file a written damage claim, and photos make the claim.
- Released Value coverage pays no more than 60 cents per pound per item, per the FMCSA: a 25-pound TV gets $15.
- An estimate given sight unseen, by phone or online, is an FMCSA red flag.
- USPS online change of address costs $1.25 to verify your identity and takes 7 to 10 business days.

Why should you make a photo inventory before you move?
This is the tip almost nobody does and almost everybody wishes they had. Before you pack a single box, walk each room with your phone and record a slow video. Open drawers. Get close to the TV screen, the dining table top and anything with a serial number. Then do it again on moving day, before the truck doors close.
Why it matters: the FMCSA says you have nine months from delivery to file a written claim with an interstate mover. Nine months is a long time to remember whether that scratch was there before. A dated video settles it in seconds.
Keep the files in a shared cloud folder named for the move. Add the estimate, the bill of lading, receipts and the mover’s contact. If you’re selling a house at the same time, put your closing papers there too. One folder, one link, no hunting through email at 11 p.m.
What’s the smartest way to pack and label boxes?
Start early. Sort what you own about two months out, and don’t pack what you won’t use. A printable moving checklist, like Real Simple’s, breaks the weeks down so nothing piles up at the end.
Then try a numbered box system instead of writing “kitchen” on everything.
- Give every box a number and a room color (a strip of colored tape works).
- Keep a simple spreadsheet or notes file: box number, room, what’s inside, fragile or not.
- If you like gadgets, print QR code stickers that link to each box’s list. A plain number and a list do the same job.
- Tape the matching color by each door in the new house, so movers know where to drop things.
- Pack a first-night box: chargers, meds, toilet paper, a shower curtain, sheets and the coffee maker.
Keep valuables, jewelry and important papers with you, not on the truck. And count the boxes as they come off. If you hand over 84 and get 83, you’ll know on day one, not in week three. More packing ideas are in our timeline for organizing and storing your stuff before moving.
How do you pick movers you can trust?
Book about two months ahead, longer for summer. Local, established companies are usually easier to check because their reputation is easy to trace. A reliable moving company page, like Three Movers’ Florida page, shows what to expect: local and long-distance options, packing and storage. Regional movers like the team at EVL in New Jersey list their services the same way. Comparing what’s included is the point.
For interstate moves, look the company up in the FMCSA’s registered mover database before you sign anything. The FMCSA lists red flags, including:
- An estimate given over the phone or online, sight unseen, with no inspection.
- No written estimate, or a price the mover says it will set after loading.
- A demand for cash or a large deposit before the move.
- Blank documents to sign.
- No copy of the “Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move” booklet, which movers must give you.
A live video walk-through can count as a real survey if the estimator actually sees every room and closet. A quote from a form with “3 bedrooms” ticked is not.
Credentials matter too. Consumer Reports explains how to spot reliable companies, including the USDOT number interstate movers must show, AMSA ProMover certification, and complaint and review checks. On a budget? Three Movers also lists 3 movers options for cheaper local jobs. Get at least three written estimates and compare the same services side by side.
Coverage. Interstate movers must offer two options. Released Value is free but pays no more than 60 cents per pound per item; the FMCSA’s example is a 25-pound TV worth $15. Full Value Protection covers replacement value and costs more. If you pack boxes yourself, the FMCSA notes a claim on those boxes can be harder to prove. That’s one more reason to film.
When does storage make sense during a move?
When your closing dates don’t line up, or the new place is smaller. A full-service company like Suddath offers moving and storage under one contract, so your things go from the old house into storage and out again without a second crew. That saves a load and an unload.

Get up to 2% back at closing
On homes listed by other agents, Beycome credits you up to 2% of the price at closing (1% kept, $1,499 minimum; not on FSBO homes or homes listed by Beycome sellers).
Buy a home →Other options: a portable container dropped in your driveway, or a self-storage unit you load yourself. Price the total, including delivery, monthly rent and the final move-in. And ask whether the mover’s coverage still applies while your things sit in storage.
Selling and buying at once? A short rent-back, where you stay in the sold house for a few days after closing, can avoid storage entirely. It has to be in the contract. Our checklist for selling a house shows where it fits.
What should you switch over before moving day?
Mail. File your change of address on the USPS site. As of October 2026, USPS asks you to verify your identity online, with a $1.25 fee, and to allow at least 7 to 10 business days for it to take effect. Use a temporary request if you’re away for 15 days up to a year.
Utilities and internet. Schedule the shutoff at the old house for the day after you leave, and the start at the new one for the day before you arrive. Internet installs can book out a week or more.
Everything else. Update your driver’s license and voter registration with your state, plus banks, insurers and subscriptions. Set a phone reminder for 30 days after the move to check that mail has stopped going to the old address.
Moving because you sold? Beycome lists your home on the major home search sites and the MLS from $99, with $0 due to Beycome at closing, and you stay in control of every decision. 22,000+ homeowners have used it (Beycome internal data, October 2026). See how a flat fee listing works. Buying the next place? The Beycome buyer program has no upfront fee.

How long do I have to file a moving damage claim?
Nine months from delivery for an interstate move, in writing, per the FMCSA. Moves within a state follow that state’s rules.
