What is Government National Mortgage Association?

Government National Mortgage Association (GNMA) - Also known as Ginnie Mae, is a U.S. government-owned corporation that guarantees the timely payment of principal and interest on securities backed by mortgages insured or guaranteed by the Federal Housing Administration (FHA), the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), or the Rural Housing Service (RHS). This government organization plays a role in providing liquidity to the mortgage market by issuing mortgage-backed securities that are backed by the full faith and credit of the U.S. government.
