What is Urban Sprawl?

Urban sprawl refers to the spread of low-density development, such as single-family homes, strip malls, and big-box stores, into previously rural or agricultural areas. Urban sprawl is characterized by sprawling, low-density development that often lacks sidewalks and other infrastructure and can lead to increased traffic and air pollution, as well as loss of farmland and natural habitats. It also can lead to a lack of affordable housing, higher costs of living and reduced access to public transportation.
